Does a Hybrid have a 12v Battery?

A Hybrid Vehicle has 2 batteries. The Hybrid Battery which supplies electricity to the powertrain, and the 12v Auxiliary battery which controls the lights, radio and other small electrical components. A functioning 12v battery is essential to the proper function of a Hybrid Battery.

How does the 12v affect the Hybrid Battery?

There is a computer in every NiMh Hybrid Battery that reads the Voltage from the Hybrid Battery and relays that to the Hybrid Control Unit. This computer is called a Voltage Sensor or an ECU and is powered by the 12v system. It is possible for a weak 12v to cause a false P0A80 (Replace Hybrid Battery Pack) This is because the Voltage Sensor isn’t able to operate properly and reports the wrong voltage or doesn’t update voltages quick enough due to the weak signal. It’s worth checking the 12v in the event of a P0A80, not only is the 12v cheaper to replace than a Hybrid Battery, you can often get them checked for free at a local auto parts store.

Should I replace my 12v when getting a new Hybrid Battery?

It certainly wouldn’t hurt to get a new 12v when replacing the Hybrid Battery. Is it necessary though? The answer: not always. When your hybrid battery is replaced by a reputable company like Buffalo Battery the 12v battery is inspected using a tool specifically designed to measure the 12v battery health. If the 12v is healthy there is no need to replace it. However, if the tests indicate the 12v will need to be replaced soon, Buffalo Battery goes the extra mile and will provide a complimentary replacement.
